General Care Discussion :: Color bleaching out?

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

I may just be paranoid since I see the horror stories on here of fungal infections and shell rot. But I noticed lately my YBS and RES have been fading a little. I do have very hard water but I'm not sure what mineral deposits look like on a turtle's shell. I'll post a couple pictures as they are hitting the 6 month mark now. I apologize ahead of time if the pictures are hard to determine anything from as they where extremely squirmy. :p My RES has minor pyramiding from when I changed his diet months ago. People weren't kidding it does take a while to fix.

This is Snot the YBS, his shell has faded to a lighter color recently. I do not notice any smell to his shell and it is not soft, nothing scrapes off it either. Its very hard. He basks often and eats fine.

This is Booger, his shell has also faded to a lighter color recently, he does have some pyramiding from my first few months of feeding him too much protein, hes now fed pellets every other day and green leaf lettuce every day. It has improved, but its definitely a slow process. His shell is solid, no oders to it, he basks the most out of both my turtles and eats like a pig.

As mentioned above I'm just curious if the fading color is normal. I read that turtles get darker, but mine seem to be getting lighter. Is this just a process of shedding or perhaps hard water?

The darkness in the pic above is from fast growth (especially around the seems), it looks more normal in the bottom pic. It will darken as they mature though.

Whats odd steve is my YBS w/the fast growth rings, he rarely eats pellets. Almost always eats greens. Sometimes I put him in a tub with some pellets and he won't even eat them sometimes. Maybe he just hit a growth spurt if that even happens in turtles? lol

He must be eating something... could someone secretly be feeding them?

Not that I know of. He COULD be eating ghost shrimp. But I still seem to have a butt load of those in my tank.
