Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Hello all!

I updated a few months ago about adding a new turtle to the family. Shrek is fitting right in with everyone and has been doing great. Yesterday my mom brought to my attention that he was making weird noises. This morning I wake to hear him making the same noise, which I think is a sneeze. He does this about every 10 minutes and usually has 2-3 sneezes at a time. Having it be the holidays and I am behind as it is, It is EXTREMELY diffiduclt for me to just take him to the vets. The one Herp vet that is located closes to me is at the Cornell Vet school - which is a very high end pricey place to go. I am very scared that I am going to lose this little guy before christmas, I need to know what I can do to help him out. I have read about dry docking him and raising the water temp?? Please anybody help, as I have been sitting here writing this note, he seems to be sneezing much more.

Raise the water temps to 80 to 82 and the basking to 90 - 92. Schedule a vet appointment ASAP for a blood test and antibiotics. Make sure the vet or tech shows you how to administer any antibiotics they give you. Keep us posted.

The College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University is the best in the country. That said, has there been any other symptoms?

Thanks for your replies. I have raised the temperature of both the water and basking area and has sealed off any possible drafts that he might have had. He seems to be doing better after I did all that. He sneezes every once in a while now. I am hoping that I caught it in time and that this wont happen again. Unfortunatley, I will be unable to take him to the vets until Next Friday. I do realize how good Cornell is, I worked there for a several years... but I also do know that they are one of the most expensive spots to take an animal! As of right now, he is looking and doing a lot better. He is on close watch until we go to the vets!

Thanks again!!!
