Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Tue Jun 28, 2011 11:04 pm   This is how I take care my turtle. . Is there something wron

I'll tell you how I care my turtle, Beast. But first I want you to know that I'm 9th grade (just a few days to 10th), don't have much room (the new home isn't done, yet), my family doesn't really like my turtle. . . That's all I want you to know. . .

In the morning I feed Beast a pellet, 7 pellets. . Then, if the day is sunny, I give him a sunbath, I put the aquarium at the sunny spot. But he often hiding below a shadow. I think he hate sunbath. But its for his own good. About 1 hour, I put him inside the house. . In the afternoon, I clean the aquarium and change the water (tap water). Brush the aquarium's floor, and the stuff inside it. I did this everyday. I don't have a filter, I think it's too expensive and there's not enough room for it (i'll buy it when the house is done). . I fill the water about 3,5 cm. If I fill it too much, I can't lift the aquarium. Too heavy. . In the night I feed him again, same as morning, but often begging for more. . Then I go to bed. .

I never had a problem with Beast. He looks very healthy. Never leave the food floating around. Never leave me alone, when I looking at him (always respond, when I'm around the aquarium). I also can hand-feeding him.

Is there something wrong in how I care Beast?
Or there's something you want to ask?

Sorry for my bad english language. . Some pic coming soon. . .

You need to rethink how you're keeping your turtle. You need certain equipment when you're keeping turtles indoors and you shouldn't be keeping the tank in direct sunlight or moving a tank that has anything in it.

How long until the new house is ready? This really isn't a healthy way to take care of Beast. He needs a large aquarium (10 gallons of water per inch of shell and extra for growing). He needs a filter rated for 2 - 3 times the aquarium size. A basking dock where he can get totally dry with a UVB light and a heat light shining on the basking area. How big is Beast? That will determine how much you feed him and what to feed him? Measure just his shell as if it where flat. Maybe you can do extra chores and or get really good grades to earn some of the things he needs to be happy and healthy. And welcome to the forum. Glad your here asking questions.

Really long long time, about half or one year (i'm a poor :/ )... The aquarium is big enough for a 2cm turtle, but the water is the problem, I can't carry too much water (today I'm raising the water I put the whole stuff out before I carry it). UVB light is tottaly expensive for me (sorry :( ), but I already tell my mom that I want to buy a heat light. Beast is about 2cm long. I feed him by measuring the head, just like this site said :), about 5-7.

I know this is not a great idea to tell how I taking care my Beast :(. Because, I can't do what people recommended. If I move to the new house, I could do it well. I also think that I should help my parents to pay the bill if I use a heat lamp and a filter,.

@ryanzillboy---you're doing a fine job with what you can afford, and at least you're looking for info and answers. It's clear that you care very much about your turt, and that's important....sometimes I believe that it's even more important than the expensive stuff...and turtle-keeping IS expensive! (by the way, your English is quite good)
The heat lamp can be just a regular light bulb in a "clamp lamp". Just shoot for a bigger tank and a filter when you can afford it---that way he'll have more room to swim around and you won't have to be lugging all that heavy water and cleaning every day! Turtles are happy when they have plenty of room to swim around! Maybe put driftwood or a rock in there that he can climb up on and get dried out.
IMHO, these are the most important things, the other stuff (UVB set-up, heater) will have to wait....
I am lucky--I could borrow $$ and give my turt a nice new set-up.Even so, there are still things I need to get...and when I can, I will!
Good Luck

Instead of moving the tank when your turtle needs sun. Just take him outside and let him roam around supervised. With natural sun 20 minutes a day provides a lot more benefits than a whole day with a UVB light. Steve and I are worried about you moving the current tank so often. It could break and cost you more money. So just take the turtle outside. Just remember never leave unsupervised.

Beast's growing up nicely... I didn't realize that :| I feel that he still the same... But, i don't know, my sister told me "Wow~ Beast is growing up". Then I think that she had a problem with her eyes. Then she told me that I always looking at Beast everyday and almost everytime, that's what make me feel Beast isn't grow a bit. Lol
