General Care Discussion :: Cuttlebone?

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

After reading a bunch of stuff I decided to pick up a cuttlebone (95 cents what?!?!) to make sure Wasabi's getting enough calcium. I read that you could just let it float in the tank and the turtle can play with it and nibble. Anticipating my turtle's reaction, I just broke off a piece and threw it in. She just flat out attacked and devoured it. I'm sure if I put the whole thing in and came back later it would be missing and I would have a calcium turtle. So, calcium is good, but I'm sure eating too much would be dangerous. What is a safe amount to give? Should I avoid it completely? What's a good idea?

It's good just remember to remove the hard backing and any metal clips.

How much to give is hard to say... but I would give a few pieces weekly if she's eating them.

I just put the whole thing in there with most of the backing removed. Jordtim eats as much as he needs, the first one lasted 3-4 months.

I bought some calcium powder and cuttle bone today. It's called "Repti Calcium with D3" Calcium minimum 38% - Max 43%
Do I use the cuttle bone *and* the powder, or just one or the other?

Is she interested in the cuttlebone? That would be preferred but the powder is ok too.

I don't know - she is in lock-down.

I just put the whole thing in there with most of the backing removed. Jordtim eats as much as he needs,

Like PridgNYC, I tossed it in and assumed (bad word) she knew what she needed. Sometimes she would chomp away for a few days, ignore it for awhile, and then chomp again a few weeks later

Like Wasabi, I was afraid I was giving her too much, so I stopped putting it in...result: not enough calcium.
So....
Do they kind of know when they do and don't need it? If so, is just leaving a cuttle bone floating around at all times the way to go?

I've changed to just giving a bit at a time. She's not as amused with it now and will take her time with it. Maybe after a while I can start letting a big chunk float around.
