General Care Discussion :: Adopted RES

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Mon Mar 06, 2006 10:55 pm   Adopted RES

I adopted two baby RES's (as in less than 3") from a friend. He bought them for his daughter, who never took care of them. I mean, no lights, no water changes and poor food.

One died the day I got them, in the sun this last summer (trying to help MBD)...

The other's doing pretty well now. Eats hardily, shell's hardening up (was very soft; touch and go for a bit).

Background, he shares a 135G tank with a very healthy (3" long) juvy painted turtle (found her in my driveway!). Tank has two 500 Aquaclear series filters (decent filtration) with two powerheads and an undergeravel filter.

They have UVA and UVB lighting. They have a floating turtle dock, live plants in the water, get fed pellets etc. Water's kept at 78 degrees (much warmer than the swamp my painted's from)

Seems to be pretty happy.

Now for the bad part.

He appears to be "pyramiding" on two of his pleural scales on his carapace. I am probably overfeeding him, I have stopped that. (So darn cute to have them take food from my hand!)

He also had a snapper as a tank mate for a bit. Until the snapper got overzealous at feeding time and bit both the painted and the RES. Snapper's now in a 55G by himself.

What else can I do?

sorry I didn't notice this post when I asked about your RES in your introductory note ! Your set-ups sounds great and separating them sounds like a wise thing to do. Just keep doing what you are doing and they should thrive. Sound pretty lucky to get away from that other environment. Nice to see someone else from Massachusetts here !

Your set up sounds great!

What I have seen recommended is going to feeding every other day while offering some veggies daily, not pellets.

We would love to se pics if you can!

At the size your turtles are you could feed pellets (the amount that would fit in their head if hollowed out.. minus the neck) every other day. Offering veggies every day. You could also lower the water temp a bit if you wished. You could have it between 72-75.. usually the higher temps are for hatchlings or ill turtles.

It sounds as if your RES was lucky to survive without any damage and a few scutes pyramiding is the least of what could have happened. Is it possible for you to post a picture for review?

I've also noticed that Porkchop (called that because it eats like a PIG) doesn't have a tail?
