General Care Discussion :: Boo boo on shell

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

I didn't bring this up before since I was pretty distracted with other strange things Wasabi was doing: She laid her first egg and was acting crazy due to being gravid. In that crazy state, she went ballistic in her tank. Even going so far as to knock the rock over and escape the tank a few times. I've since then done a few renovations to prevent such cases in the future, but through it all, she got a few boo boos. When the rock fell over and she proceeded to rub her shell on it, she got a scratch on the top of her shell. When she took plunges off the counter she got little nicks too. I don't even think anyone noticed them in Wasabi's intro pictures, but I want to make sure everything's alright. I did a lot more water changes and kept a close eye on her... She's been just fine.

Next time she's gravid I might want to think about getting a padded tank... Though maybe the next times wont be as bad. Will her scutes eventually repair themselves?

She might get a scar. Can you tell how deep those injuries are?

Not deep at all. It looks bad because it's a different color, but there isn't a depth to it. It's just as if the surface was scratched.

The shell is not always as thick as you think it may be. I'd just keep an eye on it since there is a chance for crud to collect in there. Things should be fine after a big shed.
