General Care Discussion :: Shedding?

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Hi! So I'm new to this site, but I'm so glad I found it! I've been taking care of my sister's baby RES (Carlos) for about seven months now, and things have been great so far. We got him a 10-gal tank and a platform for basking, heating lamps, and a filter. When she first got him, he had a strange green film on his shell, which I was worried about. Later I found out it was just an algae and I cleaned him off and he was fine.

But about a month ago I started to notice that the space between his scutes is getting brown and kind of rotten looking. Also I noticed these white spots and I wasn't sure what they were.

So, basically I need some help on whether he's either extremely sick and needs to see a herp vet, only slightly sick and I can fix it easily, or if he's totally fine, it's all natural and I'm just a noob. :) I'm thinking it's just him shedding for the first time, but does it really take this long for them to start shedding?

Here are some pictures:

Thanks!

Hi Tracy, can you post a picture of his shell? The seams might be brownish, but should feel pretty solid.

Is it just me or does Carlos' head look big compared to his shell? You said you've had him seven months. How long did your sister have him before you got him? I've had my RES for a little over eight months, and she is bigger than what Carlos looks in the pics. She is about three inches or a little long shell wise. She was tiny when I got her. Maybe it is the angel of the pic that makes the head look big and the shell look small?

I'm by no means an expert either.

Can you dry the shell off and get pics? I've been dealing with not knowing what is going on with Angelina's shell. She is now starting to shed (first time I know of since I got her), and her shedding does not look like this. This looks more like fungus to me. Steve will know more though.
