General Care Discussion :: New Turtle Owner

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Sat May 05, 2012 11:08 pm   New Turtle Owner

On March 24th my fiancé and I purchased some hatchlings, before we found out it was illegal to sell hatchlings. We bought a turtle reptile kit from Walmart, that included a light, basking area, tank, etc. We placed the tank in our bedroom. Our bedroom with air conditioning on, is about 70F to 75F and to help cool the room we have a fan on the entire time someone is sleeping in the room. (Side note: we have different shifts so I sleep during the day and he sleeps during the night) Therefore the fan is on most of the time. To combat the coolness of the room we purchased a water heater to keep the water temperature up. However, it is only keeping the water 71F to 78F based on our external thermometer. We bought a heater that was meant for a 2 to 5 gal fish tank, and our tank is a 10 gal tank, with about 2 to 3 gal of water in it. Should we purchase a better/bigger heater?

Second question is, when we bought the kit, we also purchased a book which explained a lot about our red eared sliders. We set up the basking light and assumed it needed to be on 24 hours a day. Because of this assumption we have lost 2 bulbs in a month. One was a regular light bulb which exploded and we immediately removed the turtles and thoroughly cleaned their tank and all items in their tank, the other was a day light bulb meant for a basking bulb purchased at a pet store. What kind of bulb would be best to make sure they get their heat and their necessary UV absorption? How long would be best to leave the light on?

Third question is, When we remove them from the tank to clean the tank, we feel their shells are not hard as a rock. They are kind of soft. Not malleable soft, but able to push in a little soft, though we take care not to push in too far for fear we might hurt the turtles. They are still very active and swim constantly. Do we need to give them some calcium supplements?

Fourth question is, one turtle, Beavis, is noticeably larger than the other turtle, B2 (if anybody watches adult swim then you know the partner in crime of beavis). I know that both turtles eat, however, I have noticed that Beavis eats more than the other turtle, often eating the other portion while B2 is chewing. Should I be concerned about the size difference? I have tried feeding them in a different container, one we use to house them while cleaning, but they wont eat and I am worried that I am freaking them out by moving them so much. What should I do?

Fifth question is, Beavis' shell has turned a paler shade of green. I thought maybe he was shedding, but now I am not so sure. What should I do? Should I be worried about the color?

We feed them twice a day. Sometimes we put small apple bites in their tank (at the advice of the pet store clerk), most times we use turtle pellets and the dried krill. Is this appropriate or wrong?

Any help or advice you can give was would be tremendously helpful. We want our turtles to be happy and live a long healthy life and we understand that we have to make sure we give them the proper care to ensure their health.

Thank You,
Amanda Stevens

Does your heater have an adjustable thermostat? A good heater is always recommended.

Turtles are diurnal, meaning they are active during the day. They sleep at night or when there is darkness. So keep your basking lights timed to sunrise through sunset hours. A UVB like a Reptisun 5.0 tube would be OK.

Hatchlings have slightly pliable shells. Make sure they have a good pellet as their staple (that includes D3 and calcium).

I would feed them separately. Feed them in their normal tank, just take out the one you don't want to eat.

That might be due his growth, can you post a picture?

Check the feeding the section for ideas. I would skip the apple and try carrots. Don't offer too much krill, it should only be used as a treat.

#1 I wouldn't worry about the heater too much, you SHOULD only have them in the starter tank for 6months-1year after that it needs to be at minimum a 75 gallon. I do not mean to alarm or scare, but turtles are not a cheap or EASY pet to start off caring for, BUT you did come to the right place for advice! Your water temp varies alot, that is very odd with a heater, SHOULD keep a constant temp or with in a degree or 2, but your temps are fine turtles are tough animals.

#2 "basking lights" it is recommended that you have at minimum 2 bulbs a Heat and UVB bulb . (lights should be run based on the amount of sun your area receives) (apx 10-12hours) For heat i just use a 100W non soft, "OLD SCHOOL" light bulb and a clamp lamp from walmart (7$)
I know links are not allow but this is not for selling purposes, this is for education. These UVB are my favorite, you get about 6months to a year per bulb based on apx 10 hours of light a day, they can be found for about 10-15$ online.

Do you know how the bulb exploded? I have only has 1 bulb break in 2 years and it was from splashing?

#3 pictures if possible help with shell issues, but they are hatchlings so they are growing, i wouldn't be too concerned about the "soft" shell they are young.

I go through about 2 a month on the calcium slow release things, lol, my guys like to eat them, MOST people can just use cuddlebone, but my girls wont eat them

As for tank cleaning, if you have a good filter you shouldn't have to clean but once a month, you don't want to clean the water too often as it has to reestablish the good bacteria every time you clean.

#4 HA! my favorite issue with RES, food dominance, this is an issue for almost everyone when you feed together in the same place, also RES are MESSY MESSY, MESSY eaters. I take my girls out, 1 at a time and feed in a 5 gallon Rubbermaid container, no dominance no fighting over food and cleanup is easy as a flush! HMMMMM won't eat in a separate container??? if you have to feed in the tank, just make sure to remove one of them, and only feed 1 at a time, as they age keep trying to feeding box. AS for moving them, its better to handle them NOW, because they will get use to it, when i first got my girls, THEY hated being picked up, now they KNOW its feeding time, when i do! lol

#5 again, shell issues are better resolved with pictures if you can, if not i'll try my best w/o them.

WOOOOOO! did i get them all?

LONG healthy life, is what you will get if you treat them right, RES have been know to live up to 50 YEARS in captivity, the average is around 30! The first 5-7 years are the MOST crucial! if you can get past that and they cost of building them a proper home once they get adult sided, they are GREAT pets!

QUICK question for you, you said you feed 2x a day? what are you feeding and when?

How many hatchlings did you get? I bought 3 last August and could have probably been fine getting just two, but they all get along so well I wouldn't want to get rid of one.

Hatchlings normally get along pretty well. It's usually in year 2 or 3 when fighting/harassment becomes a big issue.
