General Care Discussion :: Turtles with both gender characteristics

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

I originally thought my larger turtle was a girl and the littler one was a boy, but I was browsing around some turtle pages and I found pics if gender characteristics. Males have longer claws with a longer fatter tail; while females have shorter claws and short skinny tails. Also females tend to be larger. Well, my little turtle, which I assumed was a boy, (since the people who had them before me said he was), it has short claws and a short and skinny tail (vent close to body). And even though it is still a smallER turtle, it's probably a girl. However, the larger turtle, which I assumed was a girl, also has short claws, but the tail is longer and the vent is in the middle of the tail. Neither of them has a concave plastron, but the little one is always on top when they stack (which is very cute btw). They are both about the same age and both over 4 in. Anyone have any ideas?

Is is possible for you to post pictures with both the claws and tails showing and we can all give you our opinions on if they are boys or girls? :)

It can be quite confusing. I still don't know what mine are and they're almost 6in each. I'm assuming they're girls but who knows. I think you may have to wait a while longer to find out. Pics could help tho.

I hope these help, but either way, I still love them just as much.

Here they are together just to show size and health.

Here is the bog one's claws and tail. I'm assuming it's a girl.

Here's the little one, the tail is smaller by comparison, but the claws are basically the same.

They're both happy and healthy. When I first got them, their shells were a little soft and they weren't very healthy, but they are much MUCH better now!

I hope this helps. Thank you for helping!

i got a plan! buy 2 basking docks. set them up identically then paint one pink and the other blue. put a small "my little pony" near the pink dock. and put a hot wheels toy jeep on the blue dock. the turtle that basks on the pink doc is a girl. the one that goes to the blue dock is a boy! tadaaa!!

If only it were that simple. Please tell me you don't do that with human children. There is an easier way! :)

I'd say female because of the nails, but the one tail does look longer than the other. Hmmm... hopefully others will be able to help more. :)

I'm going with two girls here.. I have a male and the larger tail still isn't as large as a males tail is.. If I could get good pics of them I could show you the significant difference :)

Looks like two ladies to me. :) The nails and tails of both look female.
