General Care Discussion :: What to do with unfertilized egg?

Hello everyone!

I have 2 res turtles. Lily and Squintz. Both females.

Recently I saw an egg on my bathtub. I put them there over night and then switch them outdoors when the sun comes out.

Having turtles are a bit pricey and requires moderate to heavy maintenance. I feel bad for not letting my turtles have babies now but to be honest I cannot do this right now.

What can I do with the unfertilized eggs?

I also have 2 females, both lay eggs regularly. I throw them out. I tried to keep a couple once for my friend's kid to bring to show and tell but I'm not sure how to preserve them.

Throw the eggs away?

Not letting your turtles breed is actually a good thing to do. RES are over-populated
already now and they are invasive.

I would just throw them away. Probably not very tasty for breakfast.

Well...Being that they are 2 females and the eggs are "unfertilized" there wouldn't be ANY babies anyway unless one of them had relations with a male within the last 3 years, which i doubt.
So yeah....Just toss em

I just recently discovered that my Turtle had laid an egg in her tank(unfertilized). I don't know how long its been there, and i think it may have been trying to lay eggs a couple weeks earlier. I cant find any other eggs in the tank and im worried that she still might have some eggs. what should i do?

You can feel for more eggs and keep an eye out for any nesting symptoms. Would you be able to provide access to a nest if necessary? How big/old is she?

ix years. We live in an apartment so its limited. Plus theres lots of cats around the lawn

Is she kept alone? Has she shown any nesting symptoms?

My fish or the other turtle usually eats them all since she never uses her nesting area.

Sorry for the late bump, but I just stumbled across this thread because my girlfriend and I were wondering the same thing. We recently started posting last month. Steve theorizes that the bigger of my gf's two turtles is a girl (and I think both of them might be). @Linus -- you said the other turtle eats them; is it safe? Have there been any odd results after the turtle eats the eggs? Steve, what do you think about a turtle eating an unfertilized egg?

It's probably fine though I would avoid it. There would be a huge mess in the water too.
