General Care Discussion :: Black Turtle Feces

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Sat Jul 21, 2012 7:06 pm   Black Turtle Feces

Hi,

I am new to the forums and hope someone can help me out. My turtle's shell is about the size of my palm and last night I fed him 1 food pellet. This morning, I was going to feed him 2 but I found pure black blobs in his box. I removed them with a toothpick and they stuck to the toothpick. I can only assume this is his waste. I am not sure why this is the case though but recently, we changed his habitat. He used to live in a regular sized box but we moved him into a much bigger box to allow for more moving space. But he seems to like the smaller box more so I move him to the smaller box during the day and back into the bigger one at night since he tends to like escaping from the small box and roaming around the house (caught him under the TV shelf once). Could this be a matter of stress on the turtle from occasional moving box to box or is this a serious health issue? Has anyone else seen this happen with his/her turtle? I'm really worried and would appreciate any advice!

Thank you!

You keep your turtle in a box? Is this a joke?

Sorry, I just call it a box. He has water to swim in and a rock to bask on.

Have you got UVB light and a heat lamp? What's the capacity of his tanks (gallons) ?

I don't have a heat lamp but he is by the door so there is constant sunlight. The tank capacity is 10 gallons.

Okay, we'll the black stuff sounds like regular poop. Please take a look at the website (redearslider.com) and make sure you have his necessities. You have a filter though, right?

Really? I checked with the local pet store and they said regular poop should be watery and brown/green. I haven't read anything about black poop though after looking through a bunch of websites.

Poop is poop. I wouldn't expect yours to be the same every day. It can change color based on food, nutrition, and how much did the turtle digest before going. I would personally be more worried if I saw runny or green poop (green only if I was feeding green pellets with a artificial coloring)

He ate a regular Reptomin pellet the night before and had the black feces in the morning. Could that be why?

If I recall, it should look brownish from the reptomin. Foods can alter the color of poop, I would take a close look at his next movement.

So far, no more of the black poop. Hopefully it won't show up again. Thanks for all the advice :)

I know this is off topic but I just wanted to double check about the amount of of Reptomin I should be feeding him. His shell is about as big as my palm, so about 3 inches. Am I supposed to be feeding him 2 to 3 pellets every other day?

The rule is no more than the size of his head per day.

Older turtles can get less pellets but should have other things to eat, specifically veggies.

How much water does he have, and how big is he? I can't imagine what size/shape rock you might have in a 10 gallon tank that would give him a lot of swimming room and provide for an optimal basking area. Do you have any filtration?
