i moved from Cleveland Ohio to New Hampshire, 700 miles 13 hours. I took my 20 gallon aquarium, filled it with about 5 gallons of water, just enough for them to float in and buckeled it into the back seat of my car. They had 0 issues, then again, about 10 hour was NY throughway with only 1 stop for gas, and no other real stop and go issues.
They recommend to house in a box or plastic container, but i would think that would make them MORE suseptable to temp control issues, with water i was able to make sure it was around 75 for the whole trip.
A note, no matter how you transport, do not feed w/i 24 hours. Feed a nice sized meal about 30 hours before you go, then no more food, till about 12 hour after they settle in to thier new home. They get sick or go to the bathroom ALOT when moving (like steve mentioned).
I did cover it with a black beach towel! they seemed to have been sleeping for most of the ride (when ever i checked on them!)
