General Care Discussion :: Ms. Turt broke a nail

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

well, here's how the story goes:

my turtle has shell fungus, which I recently confirmed from reading various posts on here and I plan on going to a vet tomorrow to ask if they can provide the silver lotion for her.

I decided I wanted to get a better look at her shell when it's dry so I was going to dry dock her for a little while before I went to bed, and then when I went to check on her I noticed she was bleeding and her claw was kind of dangling and I was kind of panicking and crying so my boyfriend took care of it for me

anyway, the claw fell off but there's no bone showing, just a smaller claw now but it's still bleeding at the end (like when you cut a dogs claw too close and it bleeds) so we read that you should dry dock her (wow thats ironic considering this all started with dry docking) so now shes in a rubbermaid-like tub with a towel and her night light (75W).

I did put a small amount of neosporin on the area, and shes doing her normal "try to get out of the box" act and I just want to know if it's okay that she isn't sitting still---will it affect the healing process at all?

I just love her and this is the first time shes ever bled or hurt herself and I'm just wanting to talk to some people about it.

Any input would be helpful

You might be looking at some flesh, not a smaller nail. Place her into a tank where she can drink and eat for a few minutes (around 15-20min) a few times a day. Try to give her something she can burrow under and stay still, even if it means keeping the room completely dark and quiet. Staying dry should help the bleeding stop quicker. If the nail bed is intact, her claw will grow back.

Thanks for the reply Steve.
I put her back in the tank this morning and fed her some pellets and lettuce. it doesn't appear to be bleeding but I will keep an eye on her
