General Care Discussion :: Water Temps - Transition from Hot Weather to Cold

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Sat Sep 22, 2012 3:16 am   Re: Water Temps - Transition from Hot Weather to Cold

Bedtime for Bonzo, but after I logged off and was heading down the hall, I saw a new behavior. This was in the total dark (except the camera flash) and even that didn't seem to affect her. She had, and does, still does have her eyes wide open. She does blink (that's the pic with her eyes closed) - hard to catch blink.
Anyway. Something in my gut says something is not right; I just can't put my finger on it.
Oh well.
Lights out at this household. I hope to wake up to the happy, peppy, spunky Penelope I am used to.

she looks good. one of my females does the "quick escape" bask as i call it with 1/2 of her body hanging off the dock. It used to quickly get back into the water but she rarely uses it. the ONLY thing i can think of is that your basking temp is too high. I have always gone off the +10° method. so if the water is 78 the basking temp is 88, but thats just a personal thing.

You added the bugged out picture after i posted. It's odd: you could take it to a vet for a check-up but most vets are truely clueless about turtles.

Oh. I love my vet. She is beyond awesome and owns turtles.
anyway, I am in that limbo land between - take her to a vet or wait a few more days. It stinks
I am only up because I was ready to re post - just one of those nights I guess.

I went to the kitchen, and on the way back I took a quick glance and noted she has moved towards the front of the tank. Life goes on.
Then I go to make sure the house is locked up, and she is still there. So I walk over and look at her; she had her eyes open when I got there, stared a bit. The camera was already there so I snapped a shot (no flash).
So I hung around and was talking to her for few minutes; she closed her eyes and fell asleep...and is still asleep.

…I mean, come on!
How many times has your guy or gal fallen sound asleep while looking you, straight in the eye’?
I can’t recall any on this end.
I’m used to seeing her all loose, just resting on her fake tree just snoozing away, or all passed out soaking up the ‘sun’ (AKA basking lamp), but she wouldn't dare to truly fall asleep with someone in her face.
It just does not seem like “happy turtle sleep time.”
Maybe I am just nuts.

Nose bubbles steadily, though not constantly, throughout the day.
Case closed; I give up.

The nose bubbles just started? :(

If you put some food in the water while she's basking, do she come down to fetch it?

We played "opposite day" Sunday and yesterday....all swim, no bask.
I wound up dry docking her for the night (all roasty toasty)
Today she swam, basked a bit (like a normal turtle) and ate her "white gold " (aka Belgian endive). She ate some basil too. No bubbles today.
For a brief moment. I thought she had a pink tinge, but took her outside for a good lookover in natural light; all was well. Whew!
Her eyes are dry and I wanted to put in some drops, but she was so ticked that I took her outside, her goal was to bite me anyway turtley possible. I decided to wait.

No vet yet ....I must clarify for those not familiar with us, my option to not go to to the vet is a very educated decision. If you have never been to a vet, don't use this as a reason for not going to a vet.
I must not forget that after such a long bout with sepsis and still being eggbound, not only am lucky she is alive she is probably very sensitive.
I will continue to keep a watchful eye and keep in mind that her behavior is probably a cross between moody and low tolerance for anything less than perfect conditions (i.e. water temp, water condition, etc).

PS she is back to being a "dock queen" tonight. We shall see what tomorrow holds.

this is the time where the "animal translator machine" as seen on Phineas and Ferb would be so great! hope Penelope won't have any problems.
