General Care Discussion :: Slimmy stuff

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

We just adopted a small 4 inch RES from one of our kids teachers. He is acting normally and eating. When in the water, there appears some slimmy, clear substance hanging on him mainly around the legs. Is this normal or is it some type of fungus that we need to be concerned about?

Is it sort of a whispy type of thing... if so, then it's more than likely shedding skin and perfectly normal.

What is the water temperature? Water that is too warm may cause excessive shedding - it's not harmful, though, something to avoid.

Keeping it around 78F is good for healthy hatchlings. Your turtle's shell length is 4 inches without the curve? If so, you could even drop the temp down a few degrees if he's healthy.

How big a tank is the turtle in, how much water is in it and what kind of filter do you have?
