General Care Discussion :: Stocking up on Baytril

One of my turtles started making whistling sounds when he came up for air, also sometimes would have a few bubbles escape from his nose upon returning to the water. He seems to be doing fine, swimming is normal, eating normally, no excessive basking, fairly active.

I just wanted to keep monitoring his behavior as the whistling sound hasn't completely stopped yet (he's not overweight, and It's been about a week).

Anyway I bought some Baytril online 2.5% in a solution as a Just In Case measure that he (or my other turtles) actually gets RI.
I know I could probably just bring him to a vet if he showed more symptoms, but this seems to be the medication they administer anyway. I just wanted to know if anyone else keeps this around (it doesn't have a very long shelf life as it looks to expire in May 2013, if I haven't used it by then I will probably throw it out)

I don't think anyone here does this. What about the oral form of Baytril?

This can be used orally, I believe it has to be combine with saline for injection (didn't read the instructions yet), but this can be used with an oral syringe, which I also got. Many people advise adding the correct dosage to food ( specifically food without calcium and something else). I also saw a video someone injecting dead earthworms with it and then feeding it to their sick turtle.

I know about the worm technique for other meds, but I'm not sure about using a Baytril solution that was meant for injections as an oral form. I'd consult with a vet, veterinary journal or a rehabber who has experience in this area.

There was never any plan to administer without consulting a proper veterinarian first.
Gooby actually is doing all better on his own, no more whistling, behavior still completely normal.
