hello everyone! I just bought an RES today and set up its tank. when I put it in he layed on his basking rock and then got into the water. once it was in the water it started frantically swimming up against the corners of the tank and has not stopped since, its been a few hours now. im not sure if it is a male or a female as I just got it although im pretty sure it is female due to the shorter claws. I have a 40 gallon breeder tank with a basking rock and heat lamp, also I have a uvb lamp setup there is a 125 gallon filter as well. can anyone help? ive been so excited to get a turtle and now she seems unhappy. any insight would be appreciated

I wouldn't worry too much, especially of you just got her.

It could be a panic/stress reaction, but if it is coming toward you, not away, it could also be begging.

Most turtles don't like change. But they seem to settle in after a few days.

Watch it and see what happens by the new year.

Congrats on the new addition. How big is your turtle?

I've been doing a lot of research and pretty much came to the same conclusion. Thanks for the help! My turtle is about 4-5 inches. I forgot to measure before I put it in the tank and it doesn't like being handled at all. It just swims when I pick it up. Could you give any help on identifying gender if I post pics later?
