General Care Discussion :: Excessive basking and minimal eating

Hi everyone!! 1st post, but have been reading for a while. I have 2 RES. Both about 2.5 inches long. Use a UVB light. Water temp is 75*-79*. Basking temp 85*-90*. I use an Exo Terra FX-350 water filter in a 44 gallon tank for now. My female (I think) eats great, basks for a few hours each day...all good. My male (I think) was fine at first, but now just wants to bask all day. He will sleep in the water, but back on the platform before the timer light comes on in the morning and not go back in until I put him in to feed. Doesn't like the pellets, but will eat dried shrimp and the very small pellets from when they were very young. When done eating a small amount right back to basking. Is this something I should be worried about? The all day basking and minimal feeding?

I don't think it's cause for alarm. Mine goes in spurts of either basking all the time to just every-so-often. It may have something to do with them trying to shed. Your water and basking temps are perfect. Perhaps it just feels really good to him to be under the warmth.

Do you feed vegetables?

Ya I've tried a few different kinds, but they don't really go for it. They ate a little romaine lettuce once

You need to give them lettuce everyday.. Green leaf, Red leaf... I bought a clip that holds the lettuce and sticks to the inside of the tank by a suction cup. Also don't give up on the vegetables! They need it. You will throw a lot away, but eventually, they will eat it. Try shaving up pieces of carrots and cooked fresh Green beans occasionally as well. Too much protein or only protein is not a good thing.

They had a couple bites of cucumber today! He has been more active today as well.

Nothing to worry about be glad yours bask. Try Omega one pellets. You didn't say what kind you feed but I will guess Reptomin.And vegetables. They might not like them all so try carrots red leaf etc.

The pellets r nutrafin basix and ya I'm shopping for another brand. I will look for your suggestion. Carrots were a minor success tonight! Thanks
