I know this is a family page so I'll try and keep it clean.....

I took my adult male RES to the Vet today for a checkup, As the vet was examining him, She was talking all sweet to him and all of a sudden he got a huge erection . Well needless to say my big boy is hung. Then she tells him I don't need to see that little man.

Anyway it was weird and we got a good laugh.

He got a vitamin shot after that.

Yup, it's called fanning. It might happen when they are stressed, like when they are handled too much.

I would take turtle to the vet more often if she did more sweet talking.

Question: My male has been fanning himself every night this week. I just built a new basking area for him and he loves it! Has been drying himself off all day long, since Monday and that night and since, he exposes himself at the end of the day.

Scared me the first time I saw it on Monday night. Didn't know what that was and had to look it up! LoL-- but I've been reading that it's normal for males and as long as it goes back in, everything is fine, nothing to worry about.

My question is: Should I let him do this when it happens? Or should I interupt and discourage it? There's no females in the tank, no other animals at all, so don't have to worry about other turtles nipping at him when he's exposed. Why does he do this if there's no females around? What's causing this behavior all of a sudden?

As long as it goes back in, it's OK. I think he's just getting used to it...
