And Ewwwwwwww! It was nastier than I thought it would be. I've been changing my filter regularly and doing water changes. Everything is good with my bacteria and things. I took out my substrate (river rocks) hoping that will help keep things moving toward the filter without settling in the rocks. I didn't change 100% of the water, but more like 75%. It was terrible. Checked levels and all is still good. Water is murky as it pulls through the filter it'll get crystal clear again!

This was all the stuff that settled between the rocks? That's why I prefer bare tanks

Yes! I couldn't believe what was between those rocks!!! Never again will I have them in my tank!

I'll put in a plug for sand.

Stuff doesn't settle between the grains. The filter gets most of it, and it's easy to siphon out the rest during a water change. Plus, you've got tons more surface area for beneficial bacteria.

I too started with river rock, and it's nasty!
