General Care Discussion :: New RES is looking good now!

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

He could be because he's thin. But don't try to overcompensate by feeding him extra to get him to fill out. It's good that he's eating. Slow, steady weight gain is what you want to achieve.

Well thanks! He is doing so excellent right now. We offered him some romaine lettuce last night and he ate it right a way. That is very good to know. I'm glad that things are looking up for Munchie. He is sooo cute!
Thank you all for your advice.

Well, I wasn't looking for him. I was walking on the sidewalk at school and saw this little baby there, looking so helpless. And I knew that there was no water around, so I knew he could use a good home.

Do you really think that you should take a turtle out of its natural habitat? I mean, had this hatchling had water around, I would have left it. I just don't see any reason for taking them out of the wild unless they are in danger. But that's just my opinion. I wouldn't really know.

I agree with khobbs. A turtle should never be removed from their natural habitat to be kept as pets. The only exception being if their health is in jeopardy or they aren't native to your part of the country and are a pet that's been released.

More than likely, if you're buying a hatchling from a pet store, you are doing it a favor and saving it's life. I've read all kinds of posts where people have talked about how bad the environment was in the pet store and how sick the turtles were. I mean, if I had the choice of rescuing one from a pet store that didn't take care of it properly, and just taking one out of its already established habitat, I would go with the one from the pet store. That's the way I see it. You're doing a favor and saving a life, whereas the one from the wild may do perfectly fine. And like I said, the only reason I took that one was because I knew it wouldn't survive, especially without water.

Do you understand now, Andrew?
No one was trying to jump your case or anything, and I wasn't offended. I just saw it from a different perspective than you. No big deal, just as long as we understand where the other person is coming from.
