Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

I'll try to keep this brief.

My slider is a few months old, just put him in 40 gal tank with 20gal water, fake plants, floating platform, canister filter, dual light, submersible heater. I feed him pellets and dried shrimp.

1. He likes to hide. A lot. Will this change? Is handling him and moving him around too stressful? He hides by the filter intake or heater mostly.

2. He doesn't bask. Ever. He's not doing it when I'm not there either... I've spied on him. Water is a constant 78, basking lights are in the right spot, platform is accessible. He just wont go up there.

3. He won't eat in front of me. I think he's eating, because food goes missing eventually, but I've never seen him actually eat. He's not dead... so...

4. He doesn't swim around much. I'll find him hiding in a spot, and he'll stay there for a long time. I'll move him to the middle and he'll swim to a hiding spot and stay there.

I'm guessing the answer to most of this is, 'give him time.'

My last question is, considering the above, can I put some snails or fish in there, or should I let him get used to his new home first?

Thanks in advance!

1-Yes, most likely. Personalities vary, but RES are very curious creatures.
2-Could still be the adjustment period. Covering the sides of the tank can help. Do you have a picture of your setup?
3-What do you feed him? Pellets breakup in water, so its possible he's not eating.
4-This is part of that adjustment as well.
5-Yes, you can put them in.
