To me substrate is more than just something pretty to look at. My turtles use the sand to navigate the bottom of the tank. Much like wild turtles use mud sand and rocks. I've had sand in my tanks from the start of turtle keeping without issue. A little gets in my filters without harm so far. I'm not sure if the eat it I've never seen them do it anyway. Sorry it didn't work out for you.
