lawsofpower48 - We aren't upset because we can't afford them (most of the people on this board have spent well over 500$ on their turtle setups). We simply worry about the overpopulation. Even if you have friends and family that want the babies, it doesn't mean that they will be responsible. They may release them, after all, you cannot guard them every moment. And remember that a male and female kept together can lay many, many eggs over the course of one season. Not all will be viable, but it can result in a number of turtles very quickly.

If someone on this board wanted to spend money on a rare turtle, that is their prerogative, however, don't think that just because you spent a lot of money on your turtle that you are better than everyone else.

I don't want to discourage you posting here, I'm sure that everyone on this board would be fascinating to hear about your breeding stories and see babies. So please, stick around, educate yourself, and educate others as well! Just remember that no matter what you paid for your turtle, everyone here loves their turtles just like you.

Good luck on your breeding, I'm eager to hear what comes out of the first generation!

By all means, good luck with the breeding. I certainly hope that you're breeding them because you love turtles, not because you'd like to see more of your "expensive, rare" color morphs.

To be honest I would love to see pics. I think its fascinating, however not my bag. I have no idea what I would do with a whole clutch of turtles. Just to keep in mind, there have been many who have developed careers by starting off as hobbyists/breeders. You might catch the bug and find you will be in the "exotic" animal business for a long time.

While it is not always the case, there are breeders that have maintained species in danger of being lost. Cagle's map I think is a good example. This may be the step that takes you into breeding rare and endangered species.

KungFuSquirttle - Considering that this board is not for really for advanced turtle owners, we need to take a stance on certain issues, such as breeding. It's not that we are discouraging him, but we cannot have just anyone showing up wanting to breed animals and them look through previous threads showing difference stances. Also, if someone genuinely knew the answer, they would have answered, as many of us DID give our POSITIVE opinions on breeding them (such as my posts about switching generations, I am a chemist and know a good amount about genetics).

As for other animals, there are many groups that are working hard to control the pet population. Animals coming from humane societies are spayed or neutered prior to adoption. There are groups that go into feral communities and spay/neuter the animals, one at a time, at no charge.

You cannot, however, at this time spay or neuter turtles. So we have to advise people how to control their populations. Many people say, oh, I just want to hatch one clutch. And suddenly they have too many turtles on their hands. The turtles end up being released or given away. So we choose to advise everyone not to breed their turtles; it is best for everyone.

There aren't really any breeders on this forum, we all try to be responsible pet owners and destroy any eggs.

There needs to be more positivity here instead of replying with posts to discourage LAWSOFPOWER from breeding, as we all share love for turtles. Whether it costs 300, 400, or $5, shouldnt matter. After reading LAW's posts, though that individual spent a lot of money on their turtle, did not by any means imply that they were better than anyone else. We all love turtles, that is why we are here! And in Law's defense I'm sure that he/she has enough judgment to not hand over a turtle to someone who is unable to care for it, especially when he/she loves the species and is spending time breeding it! As long as he/she is not releasing them into a pond, no big deal to me. If breeding turts is what people what to do, they will do it regardless of how much others whine and nag about useless bullsh*t.

Additionally, how much of the ENTIRE animal species is overpopulated anyway? Not just turtles, but there stray dogs and cats roaming the streets everyday, someone should take some action on that as well! Furthermore, if they are as overpopulated as many of you say, then direct LAWSOFPOWER to where he/she may adopt an Albino RES and give it a good home. Otherwise, give him/her what he came here for, which is ADVICE.

**A couple things I cannot stand is people who respond with useless answers, which really doesn't get us anywhere, because the purpose of this thread still hasnt been solved. Right? So what was the point of posting your response? Nothing!

Anywho, I'd like to see photos of your breed, and wish your turtle breeding goes well. I have no idea as to how to properly breed albino Res, but hopefully the users with more breeding experience on this forum will give their input, and the rest will be more supportive rather than adding another useless post. Thank you for your response. Definitely understandable that people would like to keep the pet population at bay, however, if one chooses to breed for the love of turtles, they will do so no matter what others says.

Just reading some of the responses which seemingly were obvious blatant attempts of discouragement towards a turtle lover, angers me a bit. If i were searching for advice, I'd appreciate people to give me that and only that. Not their opinion or philosophy upon overpopulation, otherwise I would've stated so. Correct? That was my point.

Again, I hope that those who are aware of the pet overpopulation can may direct LAWs in the right direction so that he/she could possibly adopt more albino res as he/she requested.

I personally do not like the albino res as they require too much care than other res that just eat, play and swim regularly. As usual, we should all show our support and hopes he/she breeds some happy healthy RES!

Just curious by, I have heard that breading albino creature could lead to health probles.. Is that true with turtles too? Best of luck on breeding!

Yes it is true. Albino is a defect and when you breed to try and make more albino's, you're trying to breed more defective animals. Here are some general issues that come along with albinism:

"Some types of albinism affect the immune system, liver, or clotting ability, and others may cause other physiological abnormalities such as defects of the kidneys or thymus, anemia, inner ear defects, megacolon, neurological abnormalities, skeletal defects, microphthalmia, osteopetrosis, spina bifida, and sterility, just to name a few. Albinism in general predisposes animals to skin cancer as well as photosensitivity/photophobia. In some species, some types of albinism are even lethal! So it is easy to see that albinism is NOT just a matter of pigment, it's a deleterious mutation which affects the whole body."
