General Care Discussion :: Sam Update-New neighbor in town

Just wanted to see what ya'll thought about this one.....I recently purchased a blue guorami (about 2 1/2 inches) for my fish tank.....Well needless to say, he has been a terror to one of my black fin tetras.....So I bought 2 more tetras to possibly confuse him.....Now he chases them all!!

So I came up with an idea......Give him some of his own medicine !!! I put him in the tank with Sam !!! Sam has been chasing that so and so everywhere !!!

My question: Do any of you see a prob with mixing the two?

By mixing the two, do you mean moving the blue guorami (which I am assuming is a fish) from one tank to another, OR, do you mean leaving him in the tank with your turtle?

Switching between two set ups I can't answer, except to say that I imagine that the water balance is different and I don't know how sensitive your fish is.

Leaving him in the turtle tank is a risk, because he could be eaten. If he lets his guard down even once, he's could be dinner...or lunch. Anything that goes in the turtle tank is likely to become food.

The guorami (yes, it's a fish) can be dinner.....I won't mind at all :>) He has harassed my other fish since the day I got him.....The guorami is also an air breather, so I really don't think he is all that sensitive to conditions......I will say that Sam's tank is probably cleaner than the fish tank though....LOL

I've had rosey red minnows in there with him for three weeks now.....He can't catch them !!!

Really, I didn't have the heart to just kill a fish even though I don't like him....So, I say , survival of the fittest !!

YIKES..... Too bad you don't "like" the guorami. If you lived close to me, I would buy a small tank & take it off your hands so you wouldn't have to deal with it.

Now for the info they SHOULD have told you at the fish store before you bought the guorami:
Technically you aren't supposed to mix aggressive & non-aggressive fish since the aggressive ones will chase (and possibly kill) the non-aggressives (think pirana/shark vs. a goldfish). In nature, the non-aggressives can swim away & escape/hide from an aggressor. In an aquarium, there is no outlet and non-aggressive fish WILL die (or suffer in the process), which is sad.

Actually, I did some reading on the species and supposedly if bought in a school, they are not aggressive.....Took him 3 days to kill off his tankmates, and then he started on my black high fin tetras.....That's where I drew the line.....He wasn't really trying to kill them, he just harasses them all the time.....

Maybe after a couple of days in solitary with Sam, I will put him back into the general population and see if he is reformed.....LOL

When our Gourami would harass the other fish (and he was in an aggressive tank), my husband would put him in time out. He'd catch him in the large fish net for the tank and leave him in it pushed up against the glass. He was still in the tank and could see everyone but he couldn't swim after them. After a little while he was released. Believe it or not, my husbands weird method worked to some extent. After a few times, we noticed that he didn't chase after them as much. But it really isn't his fault, this is just his nature.

Thanks for the advice.....I don't feel "quite" so cruel now......My wife was laughing at me......She asked me why I didn't just flush him.....
