General Care Discussion :: Rescue Organizations?

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

I don't know if this is the right forum for this but, I was wondering if there was some sort of organization or something people could join or donate to make sure turtles aren't mistreated or sold to ignorant owners, and taken care of, I was thinking about this the other day, because while I would like to help I really don't have the resources to adopt more turtles from everyone, but I wanted to know if there is a way I could still support this kind of thing actively.

I hope this doesn't sound like I'm going overboard or anything, but you know I just want to help after what I've seen happen, as often as it does.

For example, I knew a pet store that grouped 30-50 hatchlings in one tank with one little log, they were all climbing over each other to get light. I mean, I realize supply and demand is important but they shouldn't be selling hatchlings, much less 30-50 at one time in one tank. I want to know how you could go about reporting this kind of mistreatment. (I hear they were caught and forced to stop selling them, but I could have stopped it so much sooner.)

Depending on where you live would depend on who you would report it to. Where I live in Ohio, I was call the animal warden whose office is part of the animal shelter/dog pound.

Some people call the Better Business Bureau, some call the Center for Disease Control, and some call their local health department. I am sure that there are other institutions that can be called, that is just what I could think of off the top of my head.

As for helping, I would say your best bet is to find a turtle rescue operation near you. I don't know of a national organization, but I could be wrong on that. Let me know what you find though, because I have been itching to be more active in spreading the word on proper care of these guys.

I have done searches thru yahoo or google, typing in things like "turtle rescue" or something like that. It usually brings up one or two places.

Calling the Humane society in your area would prolly be a good way to start also.
