Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Tue Jun 06, 2006 10:26 am   Pregnant Turtle???

Hello Everyone;

I need some advice is anyone has any.

Harry & Lloyd are my 2 beautiful RES, except I think that Harry is a Harriet. I seem the 2 of them doing something that was not PG rated :D I was wondering if anyone knows how I would know that she is pregnant and if so when would I put her in a different tank with more land than she has now so that she can lay her eggs. And what do I do with the eggs once they hatch??

We could use all the help we could get. Thanks

Tammy. Harry(ette) & Lloyd

Welcome!

Females are ready to lay eggs after about the age of three. Whether or not your male is sexually mature, or you have witnessed them mating, your female could lay eggs. http://www.tortoisetrust.org/articles/Nestsites.htm has a lot of information on nesting sites.

no thats fish. and that is not called mateing that is called spawning. all reptiles mate through intercourse. . how old are your turts? i have two females and it sometimes looks like they are mateing. but i know for a fact that they are females. i had the vet probe them.

good luck

Yes! Females will lay eggs whether or not they have been fertilized. Like a chicken, lol. Read the link that I left in my post above, it's full of wonderful information.

I don't think age is necessarily the determinant in whether a turtle is capable of laying eggs, size is a better indicator (assuming a turtle is not a hatchling that's been grossly overfed).

Tammymi105, how big are the turtles (shell lengths without the curves)?
