I have a rena filstar xp3 and I love it. If it isn't quite enough for 100 gallons, it could be supplimented with an additional filter. You may wish to go with two smaller filters too. They have lesser models of the xp3...the xp2 and xp.

Fluval canister filters are also highly recommeded, and have recently been remodeled. I had, and some other people have had, issues with the handles breaking off. In the remodeling it looks like they have done something about. So if you go that route, make sure you get one of the new boxes. Some stores are still carrying the old ones.

His inadequate living conditions are the source of his problems, as you're now well aware.

For a 100-gallon tank/aquarium, a Rena Filstar XP3 is what many people currently use. At any rate, a good canister filter with plenty of room for biomedia is essential.

Can't advise you whether inside or outside is better for pics. If you're going to post a pic showing the condition of the shell (which, again, would be good), take a picture of the shell dry.
