i have 2 res that are about a year old and they have very long claws. Can I cut them or can I bring them to a vet to cut them

NO! Absolutely not. Their claws are part of the male characteristics/genetics (congrats you've got boys!!) and very natural. If they are cut it can lead infections or worse. Leave them alone and be sure that their habitat is correctly set up so they won't get caught on anything. :)

You never need to cut them. It is normal for them. In a matter of fact DON'T cut them because the risk of infection to the nail is just not worth it.

Think of it this way: in the wild, no one would be cutting them either & they survive just fine!

The long nails are a sex characteristic of some species, sliders among them. He was meant to have them and as long as they're not impeding mobility, etc. I'd just let them be. My RES has really long claws and sometimes he walks with them bent under his paws. :)
