so which is it better to have UVB or UVA?

Your turtle needs both of these. Buy a UVB bulb that emits at least 7-10% UVB rays (it also emits some UVA) and you can use a regular household bulb as well to heat the basking area. For ideas on how to set your lights up look at the photo gallery.

Regular UVB lights emit both UVB and UVA rays. Get one of those and use a regular light bulb to heat the basking area to 88-90F.
