General Care Discussion :: Tub Blind

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Sun Aug 06, 2006 3:14 pm   Tub Blind

I heard a rumor as a kid that if you deposited your turtle in a bathtub while you cleaned it's cage and then forgot about it and left it there for a few hours, it's brain couldn't comprehend where it was because there would be only white in every direction and it would cause the turtle to go insane or, in some tellings, blind, hence the term I have heard used "tub blind."

Just wondered if anyone agreed or disagreed with this or if there is any hard evidence out there? Seems kind of fishy but then I have been wrong before.

Good, because I was thinking... tupperware isn't that different from a bathtub lol! Luckily now Pokey has a nice little aquarium to thrive in.

Putting your turtle in tub is not a safe option for when you are cleaning the tank, or any other time. Left over soap residue can harm your turtle, and there is no way of knowing if you have gotten it all out.

Not to mention, I wouldn't want to clean myself in that tub when the turtle was back out. It's kinda gross really.

Soap residue is not very pleasant, neither are other cleaning agents and bathroom silicone which contain fungicides. Avoid using warm water from your tap and have a few extra storage containers around.

Yes, I do now have a tupperware thing for him to be in, this was from when I was a kid, I left my turtle in the tub and my friend said "Oh go get him! He will go blind!" and so I did and he told me that it happens sometimes, and so I wondered if there was any merit to that. However now I have a stand-up shower only so it wouldn't keep a turtle in it regardless. Plus I just got him the other day anyway, not muh tank cleaning has been done yet.
