General Care Discussion :: cuttlebone fun

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Mon Aug 07, 2006 5:05 pm

Well listen, what if you were on a food forum and told people you eat pizza for every single meal. Maybe they would say hey, that's not good for you, you should eat a variety to get all the vitamins and things you need. Just because you like pizza is no reason to get upset at the advice. They are just trying to tell you what you need to ensure your turtle is as healthy as possible and trying to make sure he lives a long life for you to have a pet.

If you don't care if he lives or dies and you don't want to hear advice or get people's responses then why waste time in a community of other people anyway? Why don't you just save time and talk to yourself about it and then nobody else will ever go against your ideas?

I understand that people are trying to give me advice so that Vien will be healthy, but sometimes it turns out even worse, and I won't talk to myself, there are other sites where people aren't so paranoid, and I do care if my turtle lives or dies thank you very much

Well it seems like you are saying "I don't care if my turtle has UVB light and I will give it whatever kind of cuttlebone I want and if it's not good enough, too bad, I am not buying that stuff for it because in the wild it doesn't get that."

The problem is, it gets similar or better stuff in the wild and that is why they survive so long, but in a glass tank they have no choice, they can't escape and get it themselves and so they rely entirely on their owners to take care of them.

It's irresponsible to take an animal who needs special care and then give it only some of what it needs and say "Oh well, it will have to do." And thn not let it be free or give it a chance to live it's own life either.

It's like if you get thrown in jail, you need sunlight too, you need certain foods and vitamins and exercise and entertainment. What if you got shackled up in jail with only a slice of bread and some dirty water everyday, no windows, nothing to do and no company, and yet you couldn't leave because they wouldn't unlock you? You wouldn't live very long and you didn't do anything to deserve it.

People here are just trying to help you care for Vienie better and make better lives for both of you. If you don't want to help your turtle or give it a good life then you should give it to the zoo, an animal shelter or a turtle rescue agency that will find it a good home.

My turtle has a pretty good life.Sure, maybe I didn't spend thousands of dollars on her, but Vien gets a lot of love, and I do care about my turtle. There are some things that she needs, sure, she has a nice aqurium, and she has food, and she has someone or something to play with.In the wild they don't get better conditions. How about winter time? There are no heaters.I am not giving my turtle away, she is fine. She didn't get seriously ill since I got her,so I'm assuming that fruit cuttlebone, and no UVA IN THE SUMMER(that might cook turtles) is just fine

We give advice because we not only care about our own turtles, but because we care about the turtles of others too. Maybe we offer advice because we don't realize that you may already know something. I would much rather be given advice on something that I already know, than not be given it at all. It doesn't mean that I agree with everything mentioned, but I like to learn as much as I can on the topic...or any other topic that I enjoy reading about.

Yea whatever people, You are just paranoid, and take your turtles to the vet evry time they yawn, and then complain about a huge bill.Normal,non-obsessed people would take anyone(even their baby) to the doctor when something was seriously wrong, not every time they yawn.

thats why wild turtles hibernate. BUT there is no need to have your captive turtle hibernate. thats why there are water heaters.

I would add to that, captive turtles usually don't survive when hibernating because they don't have mud and gunk to burrow in. Unless you want to provide mud in your habitat...

Topic locked.

I would have left the topic open since there was a valid discussion going on, but if you prefer to insult the people who are expressing their own opinions, then there is no reason to let it continue.
