General Care Discussion :: How much should a turtle weigh?

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

I saw in one of the threads that turtles around 4 1/2 inches weighed between 8 and 9 oz's. That's about a half a pound and seemed to be ok.

I saw another thread which said that a 7" turtle weighs 1 lb 11 oz's, about about a pound and three quarters, and was way too thin for such a big turtle.

Is there a rule of thumb on how much a healthy turtle should weigh? How much should a healthy 6" male RES weigh?

Does anyone out there have a healthy six-incher? How much does he/she weigh?

My female RES is slightly over 6" and weighs 694gm (1 1/2 lbs). She is likely gravid (carrying eggs) and is a bit on the heavy side (she was overfed early on and probably has a few scutes that have been retained).

The threads you are referring to also had me confused and I was going to start a topic myself :)

Thanks so much. My guy weighs about 1 1/4 lbs. I don't think he's fat, in fact I felt like he was on the thin side.
