General Care Discussion :: Little Guy (LG) Died...

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Wed Aug 16, 2006 7:04 pm   Little Guy (LG) Died...

 I am SO sad. My daughter and I just returned from 'town' (we live in the delta boonies) and I went to check on my turtles as usual and I found Little Guy just floating. So I picked him up and sure enough, he had died during the day.

I haven't told my oldest daughter (5) yet as he was her turtle but I did put him in a tiny, gold cardboard jewelry box for a little burial ceremony later.

I did everything I possibly could for him so I guess he was just too sick or had something genetically wrong that I simply couldn't improve.

Thank you everyone, for all your help.

Thank you again, everyone.

I told my daughter and it hurt to watch her cry so hard in the beginning but I believe it's important she learns about the reality of these things as life continues to go on in her little world, and ours of course.

I let her hold him for a long time then we finally put him back into my little gold box - complete with the cotton lining - and she chose a spot in which to bury him. Don't know if it's appropriate to 'bury' a water turtle but whatever.

She painted a large, flat rock bright kelly green and placed it on top of his 'spot'. Then of course proceeded to tell my husband NOT to disturb that area under any circumstances.

She went through all the normal emotions and seems to be fine for now. She went to bed talking about him without crying so 'tis a good sign. It will always be an open topic for us so I told her any time she wants to talk about it or see pictures we'll do so.

Hell, for that matter, last October 31st (Halloween no less) I had to take my 19 year old cat to the vet to be put down. He had too many problems and just couldn't make it anymore on his own. Unexpectedly, it was the most emotionally difficult thing I have ever done. That cat stayed with me through 12 moves, a previous marriage, other boyfriends, being shot by an [---]**** with a pellet gun, a 2-year stint of living with an idiot on a boat, etc. Other than my mom, I never realized I never had anything/anyone so committed to me and it all clearly came to a head that day. I even took a 10mg Valium and that didn't do anything for the emotional edge. But as usual with time it gets easier.

The vet was great. They were very sensitive and later sent me a sympathy card with signatures from their entire staff. The crying started all over of course.

BUT! I digress and am obviously rambling. So to cut this short, THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH.
