I have bought a testing kit to check levels of ammonia. The amout of ammonia is measured from 0-9 ppm. I have tested the aquarium water for two weeks now and the ammonia measures at 0. Is there a safe level of ammonia that RES can tolerate or does the first sign of increased ammonia warrant a water change?

If you have adequate biofiltration, ammonia is converted into nitrite, which is then converted in nitrate. You should be besting for all 3. The ammonia and nitrate levels should be kept at 0 ppm. I try to keep the nitrate level under 40 ppm. A high/rising nitrate level indicates that a water change/partial water change should be done.
