General Care Discussion :: Male/female

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

I have 2 RES. They seem to be noticeably male and female. The female seems to be the agressor, is that normal?

Thanks,
Mel

Depends on the turtle really. It also depends on what gender you have together.

How big are your turtles? If they are over 4 inches from head to tail, without the tail, then you will be able to tell male from female. Males will have longer front claws and longer thicker tails.

I am pretty sure that I have one male and one female. I am going by claw size, which is noticeably different between the two. One of my turtles came from the pet shop with only half a tail, so I can't really go off of that. The one I think is the female is a bit larger than the other (when I got them they were the same size). I watch them eat, and that seems to be something they don't fight over. I am wondering if the female is generally the agressor, or if that is just unique of my turtles. I am also curious if what I am seeing as agression (nipping at the other ones toes mostly) could be more of a "flirting" between the them. I only think that, because they don't fight over food. If it was a territory thing, I would assume they would
