General Care Discussion :: Silicone use in tank

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

I've read on here that if you use silicone on anything in the tank, it should be aquarium safe. I've compared the ingredients to a tube I already have (bought at hardware store), to the stuff they sell at the pet store. They have the same ingredients. Is this safe then?

Shouldn't be a problem! I am pretty sure that silicone is silicone. It's also removable with a sharp edge. Although it make leave scratch marks depending on the surface you are siliconing to.

That's what my husband said, silicone is silicone. I was just concerned because I read on here to use an aquarium safe kind. I am going to use it to adhere rocks to new plastic plants to make them stay at the bottom. Thanks for your help! :D

GE makes one that they used to say was aquraium-safe but they had to change the label because of legal issues. Mainly, avoid the ones that are for bathrooms and kitchens since they contain chemicals like mildewcides. Since a little silicone goes a long way, I use the aquraium-safe kind with anything that comes in contact with water.

I did the same thing with my rocks and plants. I glued little rocks in the base and around the outside of it. Most of them have stayed on!

I've used some of the same flat rocks that had bases aquarium siliconed to them for almost 3 years now.

Thanks for all your imput everyone! I will make sure it doesn't have the mildewcides. If it does, then I will get the aquarium kind at the pet store. :)
