General Care Discussion :: My RES isn't green..

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Mon Sep 04, 2006 1:56 pm   My RES isn't green..

He has the markings on his body like the other pictures (although not as vivid) I've seen and the bright orange red spots on his head but his shell is brown. I know I've read that as they get older they lose some of the brightness but my turtle is definitely not green at all. I don't know how to add an image onto this message or I would. Also, he was puffing his neck out a little bit earlier today, is he sick or is that normal?

OK, hopefully I did this right and the picture is decent enough for everybody to see. I just got him/her 3 days ago. He/She seems to be active, not eating well yet but he/she's a little stressed I think.

He's cute. Different turtles have different colorations. Just a suggestion....more water in the tank and lose the pebbles, they like to eat them and can get impacted.

Yeah, I read about the pebbles after I set the tank up on Saturday. The pet store guy told me not to worry about that even though I told him that I had read about them eating it. Saturday night I found this website and realized I needed to take them out.

I'm afraid to put more water because it's a turtle tank (again the pet store guy) and it has that opening on the side. I have 11 gallons in there now, I am looking out for bigger aquariums on various sites so that I can upgrade him soon.

I had a turtle tank and I filled it all the way to the top of the side hole.

He has since been upgraded to a regular fish tank. Be careful listening to pet store people...saturday we were told to feed our turtle raw chicken by one....OKEY dokey...don't think so...

Vassgirl4, can you post a close-up picture of your turtle?

Wow! That was hard. That's the best close up I can get of him right now, he is intent on hiding or swimming madly when I get near the tank. I finally just had to hold him in the water and he calmed down enough for me to take a somewhat lopsided shot of him since I had to do it one-handed.

Are you sure it's a RES? Maybe it's a hybrid with something else. I've been looking and can't find any baby RES pics that look like that. The closest thing I've been able to find is a Baby Mississippi Map Turtle. They have the yellow on the head like yours does. Regardless....your baby is definately a cutie.

I'm beginning to think he is not a red ear slider. I don't see the orange markings on his head like I thought he had, they are more yellow.

Thats why I asked for a close-up - it didn't look like a RES in the first pic. I think it's a map turtle or a false map. They have similar requirements.

Maps are welcome here too! I believe their care is similar to RES, so you'll find the info on this site applicable.

A map, care is similar, but I believe they're more sensitive to water quality.
