Hi, I have a baby RES and my friend has a larger RES, maybe 4-5 inches (shell) that he wants to give away. Will it be okay to house to two together?

Most people in here will say most definately not. There is a greater risk of the larger turtle killing the smaller one even if its by accident. You should always house turtles of the same size together.

It's nice of you to rescue the turtle, but he should probably stay in his own tank. Big ones can do terrible damage to little ones. I hope maybe you have enough room for 2 tanks?

Perhaps you could help your friend find a good home for his turtle?

If you have the room you could use a large rubbermaid container, or a stock tank to house him in to help cut the cost of an actual tank...
