Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

I recently have gotten back into turtles I guess you could say. I use to take in sick /injured ones that came into the petshop I worked for. We now have 2 baby Red footed Tortoises, and 2 cooters. The other day I met a lady that was rehoming her RES. He is about 6 inches, and very heavy/healthy looking. I have him set up in a large tote, with lights etc. He had nasty brown stuff caked to his shell all around the bottom edge so I can only assume he was in a tank full of sludge. He is agressive and hides all the time. I have yet to see him out basking, he sticks his head out and that is it. I put some greens in for him and he sort of hid in them like a wild turtle would do in algea/plants in a pond. Everything about this guy makes me think he is wild. My hubby wants me to let him go...but in the event he doesn't know how to fend for himself I don't want to do that. So I think I will keep him happy for the winter and once my pond is finished in the spring (fenced etc.) I will move him out there where I think he will be much happier.

I bet he will love the pond! I hope someday I can build a big indoor pond. i am in a cold climate, so outdoors is kind of out.
