My Zeke makes sort of a 'hissy' sound whenever he is bothered, such as when he doesn't want the vet examining him. You might have just startled her.

Hissing is their way of saying, hey, what do you think you're doing? I personally think it's cute. I believe Heather's cute turtle Zeke also snapped at the vet, so at least your turtle wasn't quite that peeved with you.

The hissing sound that you hear is actually the air being expelled from the body. They do this in order to draw their limbs in. No need to worry about it, although you don't want to do any more than needed, becuase you are probably adding stress as well.

Mine making the hissing sound when I take them outside too. All I was getting at with the stress was that you shouldn't do things just to make your turtle hiss. If it can be avoided, then take measures to do so.
