Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

i have 3 red ear sliders and have had them about 3 years, biggest one is about as big as my hand and the others are little smaller, my question is all the sudden i am noticing that their shells have like a whitish tint and seemed to be breaking or chipping alittle. Do they lose their shells? what does that involve? Should i try to clean their shells with a toothbrush or should I just leave them alone and see what happens?>

Its possible your turtle is shedding. It can't hurt to "brush" their shell.

If healthy, they should shed individual scuts...each little segment. Eventually, the whole shell should shed, but it isn't going to come off in one big chunk.

Can you post a pic of the shell dry?
