General Care Discussion :: eggs?

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Turtles who are kept inside can reach sexual materity earlier than wild turtles. Therefore, they can be smaller than a wild turtle would be for their first clutch. In the wild there are certain months that RES are inclined to lay eggs, just like most animals. However, because most of us keep our turtles indoors with a stable climate, this can lead to egg laying at other random times of the year.

[quote="Hoooneylynn"]Wow, I didn't know they made them that big! Where do they sell them? They are longer than taller right? I could get that in the mean time... but yeah I'm actually looking foward to splurging on a HUGE tank after I finish nursing school :) I was even looking at the 500 gallon ones. Do they make clear ones? Or only ones that are like dark blue where you can't see through them? Wouldn't the heater burn it? What are stock tanks? quote]

Sometimes you can find rubbermaid containers in pet stores, best bet is Ma and Pa pet stores. as far as stock tanks. they kind of look like bath tubs, but taller. someone correct me if im wrong, but i think you would see farmers you stock tanks for animals and such. and yes, Rubbemaid containers are long, and not very tall. They are light weight so its easy to drag/carry. the last 300 gallon rubbermaid container i saw was about 6 feet wide, so space is not an issue for your growing turtles. If i had a choice, i would choose Rubbermaid containers over stock tanks anyday. Rubbermaid is easy to clean(there is a drain plug and you just drain the water out and refill).

Thanks for your help everyone. I am going to look into those rubbermaid containers. I think I would only get one if it was super clear, my girl loves to observe everything around her and I wouldn't want to take that away. Shes always watching me and my boyfriend, and T.V. lol... She is very "social", I can walk right up to her when she basks and it doesn't bother her one bit. I have read a lot of things where people say they just look at us as a food source, and are not social, but I don't think thats entirely true. When I take her out to let her walk around on the carpet, she comes right to us and she sets her head on my arm and just looks up at me, and sometimes she even lets me pet the top of her head. :)

I'm glad to hear you say you think your turtle's social, Jessica. I don't know whether my turtle really likes us, but I think he finds us interesting beyond just the food thing. He watches us all the time and comes up to us. Frankly he seems more interested in us than in his food (except if the food is a shrimp!). He doesn't seem to be afraid of us any more though he was when he was little.

Yeah she was afraid when we first got her. When we walked in the room she swam under her basking platform. That's where she sleeps.. we got her a night light and she always sleeps facing it. I love her so much! :)
