I read somewhere that they would rather be alone, is this true?

I ask because they seem to like each other!

They are always in a group together and sometimes stand on one another...

For the most part, they are loners. It isn't to say that two turtles can't get along, and they will certainly use each other when basking, but it may not always be true. Aggression can come at any time, and multiple turtles owners have to br prepared to separate turtles that may no longer get along. Aggression is popular in turtles who live in a habitat that is too small, or in times such as feeding.
