General Care Discussion :: Turtles and goldfish

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

I have two turtles, each about 2 months old. Recently I put them in a tank together with two red cap orandas, a black moor, and an upside down catfish. :D

It's been a month since then, and last night I couldn't see my black moor (who usually hangs around at the surface begging for food with the orandas), and after looking a while I found that he was torn up in pieces at the bottom of the tank.

I had noticed before that they were chasing the moor a few times before, but I didn't do anything about it. They hadn't attempted to chase any of the others, though. =-=

My question is, would it still be safe for my other fish if I kept my turtles in with them? Or should I move my turtles in a completely different container?

The latter would be hard for me, since my parents don't like spending money, especially on two animals who cost less than their food did.

If you value your fish, you will separate them. RES will eat pretty much anything you put in there with them. If you want to feed some live prey as an occassional treat, then go with some guppies or rosies.

Bleh. Getting a new tank would be troublesome. It was hard enough begging my parents to get me a tank that would eventually be too small for them.

Like Missi said any fish, snails etc could end up being eaten or attacked by your turtles. Maybe your parents will be willing to get you a rubbermaid container for your turtles instead of having to get a new tank for your fish.

I removed my turtles, but theyre in those really, really tiny death bowls. I don't know where else to put them until I get one of those rubbermaids, except back in the tank. Should I put them back in and risk them trying to eat another of my fish?

Can the fish be put in a smaller container for the night? If the turts are going to stay in the death bowl all night, at least make sure that they are warm and out of drafts. The last thing you want is a sick turtle.

Any time that you want. Younger turtles may have trouble catching the fish, but they will chase them. It's good exercise for them.
