For now, the rubbermaid containers make great temporary homes. Even if they eventually have to be replaced because they crack.

Most tanks on ebay go for a pretty penny, even if they go for a good price. Sometimes you can find some great deals on freecycle or craigslist too. Everything on freecycle is free, but it may not be in the best of shape.

Christmas is coming too, you can always ask for things that you need.

I am a full time college student too, and know how hard it is...

What size is the current container? You may be able to leave them there for now... but when you do up grade your tank, go for the largest you can buy... I have a stock tank and love it... they are only about $100 compared to the same size glass tank being twice that or more.

good luck...

How big is the container? Are the turtles babies (1 inch long)? A rubbermaid container works well for the babies. If you want something cheap & bigger, you could run over to Target or Kmart & grab a bigger plastic storage container.

There are lots of people who use the plastic bins for tanks. The only reason that I have a glass tank is because I got a really good deal on it. If it weren't for that fact, mine would probably be in a plastic container.

ooo, i didnt know that, thanks. i mean for sure later on the following years, i would most certainly buy a bigger tank for them. since my baby turtles are quite small 1.5 inches can i give them a gigantic container to live in? like 50 gallons? or 40?

Well, I didn't start off with a nice aquarium....I have had my share of plastic laundry tubs & those worked just fine too! The turtles don't care where they live, as long as it is a clean & warm place. I have upgraded my turtle tank thru the years as my turtle has grown.

There's no sun where I live either. I live in Michigan, land of constant cloud cover. It gets so bad here, that there was one year where we had *constant* cloud cover for almost 180 days straight....! Terrible. So, I have a nice clamp lamp for my turtle.....$20 for the bulb, and $20 for the fixture. My turtle loves it! She goes on her little platform, and gets all toasty warm up there! They say that money can't buy happiness, but in this case, that $40 lamp setup was priceless.

FYI: even if you lived in a place where there was a lot more sunlight, the sunlight that goes thru windows is very filtered & your turtle isn't getting much benefit from it. It's best to just get that $40 lamp for them!
