What is your water temp without a light? Ideally you should only keep your lights on the same amount that the sun would be out.

Heating the water with your basking light is not an effective way to maintain water temps, and that is one of the reason's why. Heaters are really inexpensive and you shouldn't waste time getting one. Maybe even as for it as an early Christmas present. It would be very beneficial to get a thermometer while you are at it, they are even cheaper.

I agree with Missibsu. A $20 glass tube submersible heater is the best insurance to keep your turtle from getting sick. They have real lungs and if they get too cold, can get turtle pneumonia. Going to the vet for pneumonia is way more expensive than the $20-$30 you would spend on a simple water heater.

Just an FYI for those without a heater, the largest stealth heater (200W) is only $20 online and will last for years. There is no reason not to get what your turtle requires.

also, spend $2 to get a thermometer. Better safe knowing the temp THAN SORRY! :?

oh yeah, and you shouldnt have your lights on more than 12 hours a day. Its very bad for your turt. Just buy a heater. Responsibility comes with your turt.
