General Care Discussion :: Two guys and a gal under one hood - Spell any trouble?

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Thu Jan 11, 2007 9:25 pm   Two guys and a gal under one hood - Spell any trouble?

It has taken me quite some time to figure out the sex of the littlest turtle of my bunch. Recently, he's been growing the long, thick tail and the claws. I know, they aren't four inches yet, but it's increasingly evident, the same story with my other definite male. That makes two males and a female in my tank.
A stupid question but, does this spell any trouble?

Simple answer.. YES :) Maybe not right now but in the future. I mean unless you have a HUGE habitat for them.

Aside from the space issue, two males are more apt to fight and can also make life even more miserable for the female than one male (if she's not interested in a male's advances).

...not to mention all the eggs the female will lay which are going to cause you a lot of heartache trying to get her to lay them! Oi!!

As you can tell, I'm not a fan of mixing turtle genders in the same tank since I have been thru this already before.

Snapcrackers. Sounds like a hell lot of trouble. Does that mean separate tanks in the future, or one large tank divided into three sections?

There's a limit on how big tanks are, so its a limited option. Good luck and be prepared, things can escalate quickly.

steve knows his stuff. listen to him.
From the homegrowers soul, straight to his lungs. That's the method that I myself find fun. Start from seed and then you'll see, just how fun homegrowing can be.
