Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Wed Jan 17, 2007 8:30 pm   Great News to anyone who has been reading my threads!

All of my turtles seemed very inactive, and I even thought that one of them was dead. I brought them back to the store in which I bought them from, and the owner of the store said that she would put them in a seperate tank and give them some medicine to try to help them get better. She told me that because they were sick, she would take them back and take care of them. She also told me that she would give me 3 of her healthy turtles in exchange. I brought the new ones home, and they were bouncing all over the place. They were so strong that they were able to pry themselves out of my hands with their hind legs to some extent!
Thanks to all those who have given me advice while my old turtles were sick!

I hope the petstore owner was serious about treating them.

Are you able to recognize your turtles? Make sure you regularly go back to the store and check on them. I hope you realize that for the pet store owner that those RES only cost her a few dollars each. 3 turtles are extremely hard to take care of and I wouldn't undertake that task until you get a job and are able to cover unexpected veterinary costs. I think different then you, I couldn't return turtles like merchandise....

I'm so glad you've got some healthy turtles. You seem very sincere about wanted to be a good turtle keeper, and I believe you are off to a good start. The first three were unfortunately obviously ill and there was little you could do for them because of your home situation.

Why don't you stop back in from time to time at the pet store and see how the other turtles are doing? Did the one that was so still ever revive?

As your little guys get bigger, they will need an awful lot of space. If you consider 10 gallons of tank for every inch of turtle - 3 turtles will be around 3 inches long in a year, so they will need a minimum 90 gallon tank by the end of year one. And after that, they will ust grow and grow and need more and more space. You might think about how you are going to handle that.

The other thing about multiple turtles is that as they get older they will compete (fight). Most people on here with multiple turtles eventually are forced to separate them because they fight. They can even kill each other. So something else to plan for is multiple tanks.

Not trying to be negative - just giving you some things to think about for the near future.

Enjoy your turtles!

Ok, I'm going to try to say this in the nicest way possible. Although I'm sure you feel you did well, I have a problem with the fact that you took your sick turtles back because you couldn't pay for their vet visits and then you got THREE more, not one, but THREE. How in the world are you going to care for them when they are bigger and IF these get sick what are you going to do then?? Trade them in again? Another thing to consider, is that you have no parental support on this and as you've already seen these "pets" are very expensive. What SpotsMama said is so very true. If you couldn't afford the vet visit this time, or your parents weren't going to help you, how do you intend to make the necessary upgrades?

On that note, I'm locking this topic.
