General Care Discussion :: My tutrtle sleeps all the time

Helllo,

My REs myah sleeps all the time, she seems to never be able to stay awake, she is also not eating. She will swim and fall asleep while swimming. Is this normal behavior ? It is also very hard to wake her when she is sleeping. This has been going on for about 2 days now.

Her water is 76 and her basking area is 86 to 88, she was eating well up to a few days ago, she was eating turtle sticks and romane lettuce and an carrots and shrimps as a snack once a week.

Please help, I am new at the turtle thing

Doesn't sound normal to me. Bump the water temp up to 80 and the basking temp to 90 and call a vet.

Are there any other symptoms of illness such as excessive basking, bubbles from nose or mouth?

She has bubbles come from her nose when she first gets in the water, she is also very inactive, she barley swims and it seems as if it takes all her enery to get up on her turtle dock. We have a local herp vet around here so i will be calling them.

Sounds like the start of an RI (respiratory infection) to me. Getting to a qualified vet is definetly a good idea. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Could the bubbles when she gets in the water, just be her breathing? My turtles did that too. It's more like snot bubbles when they are out of the water. I do agree you should up the temps of the water and basking. Maybe the water is just too cold for her and she's not liking it? Do you have a water heater?

Yes I have a heater, I have bumped up the water to 80 and moved the basking lamp closer to provide more heat, temp is reading at 90 (is that to hot ?) She did eat a piece of turtle stick, but still seems really sleepy. I have made an appt with the vet.

no 90 is ok, some turtles like it even a bit warmer but you have to be careful when it's over 90 so that they don't get burned or dehydrated
